Fire protection, Emergency Medical Services, Safety Programs, Hurricane Preparedness, Crime Watch, annual Fire Inspections and Police Services are the many responsibilities of the Public Safety Department.  Police Services are contracted through the Pinellas County Sheriff's Department.
     
Fire Inspection Program    
All commercial businesses are inspected annually.  New businesses are inspected prior to obtaining a Certificate of Occupancy to insure all safety devices are in place and are working.  Private homes are inspected upon request for informational purposes only.
     
Common violations:
 
   
  • Improper use of extension cords, overloaded circuits or electrical wiring not properly installed.  Missing blanks in the electrical panel box.
  • Combustibles too close to electrical panel, water heater or other heat source. Exit signs not illuminated.  Emergency lights not working.
  • Exits (stairs, halls) blocked.
  • Fire extinguisher (or alarms, sprinklers, etc.) not properly tagged or maintained, not properly mounted or not fully accessible.
  • Storage too close to ceiling in sprinklered buildings.  Improper storage of hazardous materials (gasoline, paint thinner, pool chemicals, etc.).  Inadequate housekeeping, such as blocked access to utilities, control panels, etc. or high fire load.
  • Pressurized containers (LP gas/propane cylinders etc.) not properly protected/anchored. Exit door locked from inside (may be locked from entry, but not exit).
  • Control valves or fire hydrants blocked (including shrubbery/landscaping).
  • Penetrations through walls, ceiling, floors improperly sealed against smoke/head spread.
  • Exit doors require too much force to open.  Self-closing doors don't fully latch.
  • Building repairs not up to code.  Unsafe conditions during construction/remodeling.
